If you need a quick catchup, the prequel in question is called House of the Dragon — it’s about a Targaryen civil war (aka the Dance of the Dragons) which occurred 300 hundred years before the events of

Just in case you’re like, “Hey, wasn’t there a prequel called The Long Night in the works?” — Yeah, that got canceled.
There’s already been one casting announcement earlier this year — Paddy Considine, Peaky Blinders and Hot Fuzz actor.

Paddy will play Viserys Targaryen — but not THAT one from GoT. According to HBO, “Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”

And now, according to Deadline , there’s more! First up there’s Matt Smith, who you might know from and as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Matt will play the heir to the throne who, according to HBO, “possesses the true blood of the dragon.” However, Targaryens aren’t exactly known for being, ahem, the chillest of dudes…
Next, we have Bates Motel actor Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, the daughter of the Hand of the King.

Apparently she has, “both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.” Sounds a bit Cersei-ish, no? Hey, maybe this one isn’t evil.
Finally, there’s relative newcomer Emma D’Arcy, who you might know from Wanderlust, as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Rhaenyra is the first-born, but, alas, she “was not born a man.” Emma is non-binary and uses they/she pronouns, so we’ll see if this comes into the gender narrative for Rhaenyra.
